International Day of Monuments and Places – places to visit in Matosinhos

Today, 18 of april, is celebrated the International Day of Monuments and Places. We bring to you, in this context, some of the most beautiful monuments and places of Matosinhos, that you can’t fail to visit this year.

We begin with the popular sculptural installation “She Changes”, vulgarly known as the Anemone. This facility is composed of a suspended net that moves with the strength of the wind, representing the fishermen’s nets, in tribute to the fishing community of Matosinhos.

Another monument of Matosinhos to mark is the Obelisco da Praia da Memória, a historical point where the squadron of D. Pedro IV landed with the goal of establishing a modern and liberal regime in Portugal. A place you can´t lose in your beach walks!

The Casa de Santiago was, in times, home of João Santiago de Carvalho e Sousa. Nowadays restored and adapted to a museum by Fernando Távora, it is a house where you can admire the gorgeous structural and decorative elements, as well as an exhibition of paintings and sculptures, with emphasis in the works of António Carneiro, Agostinho Salgado e Augusto Gomes, historical figures connected to the municipality of Matosinhos and Leça.

Finally, you have to make sure you visit the current principal public municipal park of Matosinhos, the Quinta da Conceição. An old convent with a magnificent gate of the Manuelino style, after the rental by the Tourism Commission of the municipal council of Matosinhos. The realization of improvements by Fernando Távora, has given now a place to a calm park where you can spend a day in contact with nature.
